Raúl Pérez is one of the most renowned Spanish winemakers both at home and abroad. He was born in 1973 in Valtuille de Abajo and comes from a family of lifelong winemakers from Bierzo.
He joined the family winery Castro Ventosa at the age of 19 and belongs to the generation of winemakers who have revolutionised this region. He helped in the first production of Álvaro Palacios in the area and also helped the Peique family in their first vintages, so the spirit of collaboration has always been present in his relationship with the wineries of Bierzo.
Raúl Pérez has a particular way of understanding wine. His priority is not the winery, but the vineyard. That is why he works on a multitude of projects, both his own and in collaboration, taking only the vineyards where he finds the grapes he likes best as a starting point.
In Bierzo he is also technical director of Bodegas Estefanía and its brand Tilenus, and he has recently returned to the family winery Castro Ventosa. But his collaborations and consultancies are numerous and include areas such as Rías Baixas (with his wine Sketch) Ribeira Sacra (with his wine El Pecado), Monterrei, Madrid; as well as having worked in countries such as Portugal and South Africa.
In 2003 he started his personal project in El Bierzo under the name of Ultreia, an ancient form with which pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago greeted each other and which means "let's go further". This meaning is curiously related to Raúl Pérez's family and personal history.
