Pazo La Cuesta Winery

Since 1608. The oldest family winery in Galicia

In 1608, Captain Álvaro de Losada y Somoza inherited the Casa Grande de La Cuesta from his grandfather. Next to it, a hermitage, the cellars, the orchard, gardens and the vineyard that stretched along the slopes of the hill towards the Sil.

The love for this land has been passed down from generation to generation until reaching our generation, which today faces the challenge of renovating the winery, recovering the historic vineyard that is Galicia's living heritage.

A 21st century winemaking project

With long roots in the history of Ribeira Sacra

The Pazo de La Cuesta has been closely linked to the vineyard since at least 1608, the year in which the bequest of ownership of the house, the chapel, the cellars and the vineyards to Captain Don Álvaro de Losada y Somoza is documented.

In the primitive 16th century wine cellar - currently under restoration - there are vats and tanks that are probably as old as the building itself.

The winemaking activity of the Pazo experienced decades of splendour in the 19th century when Don Manuel Batanero Montenegro took over the reins of the winery.

From the vines of Pazo de La Cuesta was born the first wine labelled in the north of Spain.

Château La Côte, Château and Granja de la Cuesta Aged Table Wine, Palacio and Granja de la Cuesta Aged Toasted Wine, and even a Palacio and Granja de la Cuesta Cider are just some of the trade names that can be seen in the historical collection of Pazo wines from 1874 to 1934.

Burgundy-style creations that received national and international recognition and awards.

The family's commitment, passed down from generation to generation, has enabled this legacy to be preserved.

Our vineyard

Pazo de La Cuesta faces the challenge of recovering the spirit of excellence of a historic vineyard that is Galicia's living heritage.

The average age of our vines is 40 years old and we conserve pre-phylloxera vines over 150 years old on just over two hectares of the estate.

Our vineyard is divided into 11 different vineyards.

We elaborate our white and red wines with our own grapes - only in this way we can control their exceptionality - from autochthonous varieties such as Godello, Treixadura, Albariño, Loureira, Mencía, Garnacha tintorera, Brancellao, Sousón, Merenzao or Caiño ...
