One of the legendary wineries in Ribera del Duero, where one of the most sought-after wines in our country is made in a project headed by oenologist Peter Sisseck.
In the 1980s Peter began to help his uncle, who at that time was revolutionising white wine production with his work at Château Rahoul. After assisting his uncle in the legendary 1982 vintage, he finished his agronomy degree in Denmark in the mid-1980s.
After his studies he jumped to California, specifically to the Simi winery in Sonoma, where he saw the American technological counterpoint, quite different (much more manipulation) to the French approach he already knew. In the early 1990s he landed in Ribera del Duero to take charge of the technical management of a new winery: Hacienda Monasterio.
During his stays in Bordeaux, Sisseck made contact with the liveliest group of people in the area, more interested in drinking and having a good time than the stuffy aristocrats of the Médoc. One of these friends was Jean-Luc Thunevin, famous for having started the "garage wine" movement with his Valandraud.
Another of his friends, a wine merchant, proclaims in his catalogue "I will drink milk when cows eat grapes". Finding himself increasingly interested in this new revolutionary movement and its new wines, and following references such as Angélus, Le Pin, Cheval Blanc and Valandraud in Bordeaux itself, and Domaines Leroy, Dominique Laurent or the great Henri Jayer in Burgundy, Sisseck decided to make something outside the Hacienda Monasterio style.
And this is where Pingus came into being. Pingus is no more and no less than Peter's childhood nickname, and is today, and with full honours, one of the leading exponents of these "garage wines".
