Casa los Frailes (Cals Frares) takes its name from the Jesuit Friars who lived there from the 17th to the 18th century. Since then, more than 240 years have passed and Casa Los Frailes has belonged without interruption to our family, the Velázquez family, now in its 13th generation. As heirs to a historic estate, we feel that our wines must be true to our conscience, land and history which as such is unique. In today's world where all wines are becoming more and more alike, where this sameness tends towards uniformity, we believe it is our responsibility to bring wines that are authentic, different and true to ourselves.
At Casa Los Frailes we believe that wines should express a soil, a climate, a history and a footprint. We are aware that we have privileged conditions and therefore we feel responsible in the search for the authenticity of our terroir, but as a living being, without it belonging to us. It is our values, listening to the past and to Mother Nature, which allow us to produce pure, sincere wines that are a true reflection of our land.
Extremely chalky soils, little evolved, close to the bedrock and strictly unirrigated. A Mediterranean climate continentalised by the altitude of the dolomite mountain at 700 metres, vines of our great autochthonous variety, Monastrell, which are on average 40 years old. These are the privileged conditions that make up the estate, Casa Los Frailes, 162 hectares where the estate and winery are nestled among their own vineyards.
