Mar de Frades, a Galician term meaning "Sea of Friars", is the name given to the place in front of the Arousa estuary, at the mouth of the Umia river, where the ancient pilgrims used to land to continue their journey to Santiago de Compostela.
That small point in the ocean in front of our vineyards was the appellation we chose in 1987 to create a winery inspired by the style of the Atlantic, which was born with the ambition of creating wines that reflected its personality and character.
Our history has always run parallel to the history of the Rías Baixas D.O., which was born the following year. We were pioneers in the place that represents the most deeply-rooted winemaking tradition of the Val do Salnés, where the legend of Albariño begins and where the most sophisticated and elegant white wines in Spain are produced.
