About Remírez de Ganuza

Remirez de Ganuza Winery

Founded in 1989, Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza was born as a personal commitment of its founder, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza.

From the beginning, the idea has been the same: to make an exhaustive selection of the grapes and to intervene as little as possible in the winemaking process in order to be as faithful as possible to both the vintage and the vineyard.

Fernando's activity in the Rioja Alavesa area in the seventies and eighties, dedicated to buying and selling old vines, allowed him to select the most appropriate estates in the region to develop his project.

Over the years, elements have been incorporated into the winemaking and ageing process that make Remírez de Ganuza a pioneering winery in the application of new techniques. Innovation has been a constant since the beginning, as improvements are incorporated year after year to improve the quality of the wines.

Elements such as the selection table, the cold chambers or the use of new barrels for the ageing of the wines may be commonplace today in other wineries of international prestige, but they were not at the time they were applied. Other elements such as the bag used in the extraction of Trasnocho or the machine used to wash the grapes with their own must, are examples of the continuous innovation and search for quality carried out at Remírez de Ganuza.

In 2010 José Ramón Urtasun joined the project started by Fernando, thus beginning a new stage for Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza.

The winery is located in the centre of Samaniego, Álava. Formed by a block of buildings, old village mansions, it is made up of modern reinforced concrete structures covered with old masonry, thus integrating into the traditional local architecture.

Around a large central courtyard crossed by a natural water channel, the different buildings that make up the winery are dedicated to the different stages of winemaking, such as the barrel area, the bottle racks, the cold rooms or the selection area.

The traditional architecture of the winery, in which the interior roof made of century-old oak beams stands out, contrasts with one of the most avant-garde and innovative winemaking methods of the moment.
