About Viña Tondonia

R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Winery

In the mythical city of Haro, capital of La Rioja Alta, perhaps where the extraordinary combination of the goodness of the climate and the severity of the land is best produced, we find the López de Heredia winery, the oldest in Haro and one of the first three in La Rioja. The strategic location of its vineyards, the exceptional quality of the plantations, as well as the varieties used, have their essential complement in a magnificent winery, whose creation process was similar to the planting of the vineyards, slowly, with the utmost care.

When one enters the labyrinth of the cellars, built with strong ashlars that sit on rock perforated everywhere, in the formation of underground caverns and naves, one is impressed by the solidity and grandeur of a tectonic ensemble that has merited the name of "Cathedral of Wine".

Today, these facilities are a model. Bodegas López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, S.A. stands on a total surface area of 53,076 square metres, of which 19,718 are currently built on, of which 3,433.41 square metres correspond to the winery. 3,433.41 square metres correspond to the underground cellar, with cellars up to 200 metres long, more than 10 metres deep, perforated in the heart of a colossal block of sandstone, with endless rows of barrels (12,900 Bordeaux barrels are stored in its bowels). Special mention should be made of the 72 vats, also made of oak wood of the most diverse origins (Cantabrian, Bosnian, Allier, North American, etc.), built in capacities ranging from 60, 100, 200, 480 and up to 640 hectolitres, which are the largest. Oak wood plays an important role in this House, since both the fermentations and the ageing of its wines are carried out in these containers by completely natural and artisan procedures.

As in the work of the cathedrals, the entire construction never ends, but progresses with successive generations who leave the mark of their work and effort. Thus, the efforts of the López de Heredia family, starting with the enormous drive of the founder, have left their mark on these crypts which are known as "Bodega Vieja", "Bodega Nueva", "Bisiesta", "Dolorosa", "Bodega de las Reservas", "El Caladillo", "El Frontón", "El Cementerio" and "El Calado". Thus, the whole winery has the charm of the old catacombs, always accompanied by the flavour of the old oak.
